Marketing Heroes Balloon Debate – who will you save?

Update: The winner of the debate was Rory Sutherland who successfully argued that Tim Berners-Lee should be saved.  A close second was Roisin Donnelly who nearly saved P&G’s CEO A.G. Lafley.  It was a great night.
I’m attending what looks like being a very interesting and unusual debate this Thursday in London at the Marketing Society.
The [...]

Twitter – just a fad or something real?

I picked up a well written, if not quite cynical piece from Richard Glover in the Sydney Morning Herald about this new “twitter fad”.
His subject was “You could bring back the hula hoop if you found a way of connecting it to the net ”
In the piece, Richard suggests
“Twitter is a social networking site that [...]

On Monday 16th in March at London’s BAFTA, I attended an evening run by the UK chapter of the Mobile Marketing Association aimed specifically at Brands and Agencies.  It was literally standing room only as the picture on the left shows (see more on my Flickr site) and the evening was sponsored by O2, MIG, MX [...]

Would a TV show about advertising work in the UK?

An interesting question!  London Calling was probably one of the first UK websites to break the story of the Australian TV series The Gruen Transfer back in July 2008.
This is a show “all about advertising”, and quoting from a recent story in Campaign below
The show is named after Victor Gruen, the shopping-mall pioneer. The Gruen Transfer refers to [...]

What does the Google behavioural targeting move mean for mobile advertising?

Recently, Google announced that they will start “behavioural targeting” for web searches.
From their announcement:
We think we can make online advertising even more relevant and useful by using additional information about the websites people visit. Today we are launching “interest-based” advertising as a beta test on our partner sites and on YouTube. These ads will associate [...]

Why is mobile advertising treated like a 7 year old?

After announcing the appointment of Tim Hussain as Head of Mobile Advertising for Sky back in August 2008, I finally had the chance to sit down with him today and talk about all things mobile.
Like me, he was been involved in the first internet wave (1994 – 1999) when we had small screens, dial-up internet speeds [...]

Tesco signs up Unilever to trial of mobile-based Clubcard scheme

No sooner had I blogged about Microsoft’s view of 2019 with a great short video on mobile meets retail,  I read in this week’s edition of New Media Age that Tesco (the UK’s largest retailer) has signed up Unilever to a trial of a mobile-based Clubcard scheme.
Article from NMA by Alex Farber below:
Tesco Mobile has signed Unilever as [...]

The future of mobile meets retail

I came across the video presented below over at Dave Knox’s blog Hard Knox Life (he’s a Brand Manager at P&G), who in turn found it at Feed: The Digital Design Blog.  It was previewed at the Wharton Business Technology Conference by Microsoft Labs – looking at “Microsoft 2019“.
The video shows how mobile might meet retail [...]

User preferences now becoming more important for mobile services

Last Friday I was in the Hospital Club in Covent Garden, where I am a member.
Another guest came up to me and introduced himself – saying he had seen me present at the Every Single One of Us Powwow event in January.
We spoke for a few minutes about a new mobile proposition he was working [...]

What is next for innovators and early adopters?

Many you reading this post are probably are aware of the product adoption curve – an example is shown below (from Wikipedia). It is based on Everett Rogers Technology Adoption Lifecycle model - here is a quick refresh below.

Summarising the curve in words – from Kzero’s blog
Innovators are brave people that are willing to trial new [...]

David Ogilvy On Social Media “Totally Baffled” Says Biographer

I came across an excellent post from Jason Falls about a discussion he had with David Ogilvy’s biographer, Kenneth Roman.
I recently read and reviewed Kenneth’s excellent book, and suggested that as David was a strong fan of DM, he might have liked mobile as a medium for advertising.  Well I was partly right, and Jason was [...]

Mobile World congress video interviews with Jeb Brilliant

Mobile advertising in 40 seconds.  This is the shortest presentation I think I have ever given!
I ran into Jeb Brilliant outside the Spinvox stand in Barcelona and he pointed his phone at me and said talk!  The result is me explaining the Gigafone full screen permission based solution in just 40 seconds.
He also interviewed number [...]
